NURSERY
Thanks for a great season,
we’ll see you in the spring!
Winterizing Tips!
Decrease your watering in the fall but don’t stop completely! Plants that are stressed from drought aren’t as hardy in the winter.
You can keep watering until the temperatures are steadily in the 30s.
Remove all damaged or rotting foliage. This prevents the spread of disease and mildew.
What plants to cut back?
Common plants to cut back are hostas, phlox, lilies, peonies, catmint, bearded iris, columbine, and yarrow. Usually cutting them back 6 to 8 inches above the ground is best. Consider leaving perennials that have seed heads, this helps to feed the birds during winter!Dig up canna lilies, dahlias, gladiolus, and any other bulb that cannot handle the harsh freezing temperatures.
Add compost and/or mulch around your perennial bed to help build soil nutrients and protect the root systems.
Consider wrapping/covering the trees and shrubs that are favored by deer, i.e. arborvitaes.
Mid to late October is a great time to aerate your lawn, seed bare spots, and fertilize. This will promote healthy growth in the spring!
